Role: Design Researcher

Timeline: Immersive three-day workshops, applying a design thinking methodology to identify new business opportunities

Solution: Developed SHE Hug to focus on creating textile products that capitalize on SHE's innovative technology. The idea was to produce a SHE brand of Pet Products that use both the SHE banana fluff and banana fiber. These textiles would be used to create the Pet Product product line: Hug

Problem

Dogs experiencing anxiety in unfamiliar or stressful environments often rely on improvised or single-purpose products that do not address both emotional comfort and practical care needs. Existing solutions tend to focus on isolated symptoms rather than the broader experience of reassurance, routine, and usability for pet owners.

Opportunity

This project explored how a wearable product system could provide comfort through consistent physical presence while also supporting owners with modular, attachable elements such as calming toys and hygiene necessities, designed to adapt to different contexts and stress triggers.

Outcome

SHE HUG emerged as a conceptual vest system that combined anxiety-reducing design principles with modular functionality. The final concept articulated how comfort, behavior support, and practical care could coexist within a single wearable framework. Research findings, sketches, and presentation materials were used to clearly communicate the system logic, use cases, and design intent to stakeholders, demonstrating a thoughtful, user-centered approach to pet wellness product design.

Reflection

  • If this concept were approved for production, the next phase would focus on validating banana fiber as a durable, safe, and scalable material through material testing and supplier collaboration. This would be followed by refining assembly construction to balance comfort, strength, and manufacturability.

  • User testing with dogs and pet owners would then inform fit, wearability, and real-world performance, ensuring the product meets daily use demands without compromising sustainability or comfort. With these insights, the product would be prepared for market launch.

  • Beyond this initial product, the system could expand into additional pet categories, applying the same sustainable material strategy and design language to create a broader family of eco-conscious pet products.
